Move In

An Environmentally Friendly Dorm Room

Every year college students entering the dorms generate thousands of tons of garbage because of the purchasing choices they make. Consider what is necessary before going off to college so you can prevent all the waste thrown out and the end of the year. Here are some tips on how to make your dorm room more green

-Use crates instead of boxes on move in day so you can reuse them when you move out.

-Get a BPA-free water bottle and use the hydration stations daily, located at each Residence Hall to refill your bottle. This will save you money and you will decrease the environmental impacts of plastic.

-Use the Residence Hall printers instead of bringing your own personal printer. Each student is given a quarterly print quota, so personal printers are not necessary.

-If you do bring your own personal printer, use post-consumer printer paper.

-Steer away from plastic products. Don't purchase plastic utensils, instead invest in a multipurpose spork, or reusable utensils.

Move In

-Use Power Strips instead of using multiple extension cords.

-Use LED light bulbs: Uses 75% less energy than an incandescent light bulb.

-Have your own personal recycle bin! Plastic, paper, aluminum, and cardboard can all be combined in the same bin.

-Energy Star products: Products that have been built to meet the strict environmentally efficiency guidelines of the Environmental Protection Agency.
