Dispose of your electronic waste the right way.
We can help!

Each year tons of electronic waste end up in landfills. In 2000, EPA estimated over 4.6 miillon tons of e-waste ended up in U.S landfills. This can have many negative implications because the toxic chemicals in electronic products (such as color CRT’’s computer monitors, color TV tubes, and smaller items such as cell phones and other “hand-held’s”) test “hazardous”  and can leach into land over time and/or be released into the atmosphere. Because of imminent threats e-waste poses, the Federal law requires special handling and proper disposal of these products.

The University of California Riverside/Environmental Health & Safety realizes the strategic value of environmental sustainability and social responsibility we have to reduce waste generation and conserve natural resources. Our E-waste drive is a great opportunity for you to dispose of electronics that have reached the end of their useful lives or become obsolete. see attached for acceptable materials. Come and show your support! Last year's event generated 40,000 pounds of electronic-waste in just 5 hrs. Help us reach new heights this year!

Shut the sash campaign
Written By: - January 26th, 2009 @ 9:59 am

Save energy. Be Safe.

What is a sash?

A sash is a sliding glass door that is attached to a fume hood, that opens and closes. Fume hoods are attached to a building-wide ventilation system that sucks away chemical fumes.

Why shut the sash?

When a sash is closed, a valve attached to the hood decreases the flow of air to the hood. When enough sashes are shut, the fan assigned to those hoods also slows down into a more energy-efficient mode. A single fume hood running 24 hours uses as much energy as a single-family home. Improving energy efficiency through fume hood use is one of the many UCR can cut down on usage and cost. Read more.

Energy saving habits
  • Close the sash after storing and removing chemicals.
  • Make sure your hood is closed before leaving.
  • Inform your fellow collegues about "shutting the sash"
  • Download a Shut the Sash flyer to post in the laboratory
