Working Committees

Sustainable development is a dynamic process which enables all people to realise their potential, and to improve their quality of life, in ways which simultaneously protect and enhance the Earth's life support systems.
Systemwide
At the UCOP Sustainability Home Page, you can find information related to the systemwide workgroups. Check out the Annual Report to Regents and the Policy Implementation Status Report to learn more about the work being done by the Working Groups. Working Groups include:
- Renovations
- Sustainable Operations
- Climate Change
- Sustainable Transportation
- Sustainable Purchasing
UCR’s Participation at the Systemwide Level
UCR is represented on each of the Systemwide Working Groups.
At UCR
The following workgroups were established by the Chancellor’s Committee on Sustainability. You can look at the roster for the workgroups here and sign up to participate by emailing Ross Grayson.
Academics
The Academics Workgroup will develop and implement programs to integrate sustainability in the curricula, establish an intern program, and foster sustainability research. Additional tasks may be identified by the Committee.
Climate Action
This workgroup may be changed to be a sub-workgroup in Energy & Operations. Part of the duties will be to implement campus and UCOP climate action policy including California Climate Action Registry reporting. Membership should include at least one student and faculty plus staff from Physical Plant, TAPS, EH&S, and Housing.
Energy & Operations
This Workgroup will accomplish CCAR (California Climate Action Registry) reporting and track progress to reduce greenhouse emissions. In addition, the Workgroup will evaluate campus operations and policies and make recommendations to improve efficiencies and reduce campus environmental impact.
Funding Sources
The Funding Sources workgroup will search for grants for research internships, data collection, operational upgrades, and more.
Landscaping
Landscape features can provide the most memorable visual image of a campus and represent a significant physical asset. Recognizing the importance of this resource to UCR, the Landscape workgroup identifies ways to better manage existing campus landscape assets and provides direction for future development of landscaping that is environmentally suitable, more sustainable given natural and financial resource constraints, and that better addresses campus planning and design objectives.
Marketing
This workgroup will develop plans to ensure broad based knowledge of the campus sustainability policy and maximum participation in campus programs and activities. It will work closely with other workgroups to help create a sustainable culture that will help them meet their needs.
Natural Resources, Recycling, & Waste Reduction
This Workgroup will work with stakeholder departments, students, faculty, and staff to increase awareness and recycling and to reduce waste stream hazards and volumes.
Performance & Management Systems
This Workgroup will implement the UCOP initiatives via the Integrated Safety and Environmental Management (ISEM) System including the UC President’s Policy for Green Building Design and Clean Energy Standards, UCR Health, Safety, & Environment Policy, guiding principles, and core functions.
Procurement & Green Purchasing
This Workgroup will work to maximize green and local purchasing including locally grown and organic foods, green-manufactured products, post-consumer recycled products, green fuels, alternative fuel vehicles, and more.
Sustainable Building Design
This Workgroup will implement campus sustainable design policy, building standards, and design guidelines as well as LEED and LEED EB projects.
Sustainable Food Systems
It will be this Workgroup’s task to implement sustainable programs in Dining Services such as use of locally grown and organic foods, recyclable dinner ware, recycling wastes, etc.
Transportation
This Workgroup will implement campus transportation alternatives (such as walking, cycling, traveling via train or bus, carpooling, etc.) and alternative fuel options for UCR vehicles.
